This year's Locks of Love Party was a record-breaking event at UB, bringing in 15 ponytails to be donated to the organization before the event's end.
Held in support of the Locks of Love foundation, the event occurs once a semester. Thursday's event, held on Valentine's Day, was extended an extra hour to compensate the number of students willing to donate and cut their hair.
By 3 p.m., the volunteers had collected 15 ponytails. According to the organizers, the previous record was a collection of 14 ponytails from students. As for the monetary donations, the previous record of 305 dollars was exceeded by 50 dollars this year.
A donation of $5 was exchanged for a haircut from the Supercuts hairdressers. Only students with hair at least ten inches long were able to donate.
Cate Schrum, a graduate student with Student Life, said she feels the event is a good way for students to get involved.
"I wanted to get my haircut for a while and this was a good opportunity for that," said Nicole Gomlak-Green, a linguistics major, who was receiving a haircut at the event.
All of the hairdresser chairs were consistently filled with people receiving haircuts for the duration of the event.
"It feels good, [my hair] was down to my butt. I've been growing it for about two and a half years," said Debbie Nadolski, a mental health counseling major.
The latest Locks of Love event was the most successful compared to the previous three times it occurred. The organizers expect the next Locks of Love event this fall to continue on to be even more successful than it was this time.
