Four students suspended in alleged off-campus hazing incident

???Four UB students were arrested on Wednesday, for what Buffalo Police are calling a hazing incident by members of a fraternity unrecognized by UB. Those alleged members have been suspended from the school pending an investigation.

???Two students-Kyle O'Shea, 20, and Jason S. Rosen, 20, are charged with second-degree hazing and reckless endangerment. Timothy Sheridan, 20, and Adam Daniel, 20, who were at the house on Northrup Place where the alleged hazing took place, were also suspended.

???"An off-campus incident and arrest involving alleged student hazing on Tuesday is now under Buffalo and UB police investigation, and campus charges, as appropriate, will be pursued at the close of the review," said Ellen Goldbaum of University Communications in a statement.

???A UB student required medical attention after being doused in spray paint and hot sauce, according to the Buffalo News. The Buffalo Police Department (BPD) is not releasing any specifics and could not confirm this at the current time.

???BPD Spokesperson Mike DeGeorge said that police arrived at the Northrup house after an individual called in with a complaint about the possible hazing.

???"It is my understanding that police were notified shortly after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. There was a possible incident that involved hazing. Police responded and found a number of individuals in underwear only and found bags of marijuana," DeGeorge said.

???Rosen denied the charges in a phone interview on Thursday.

???"I will tell you everything reported was completely false. We are not a fraternity.

[Reports of] someone being sent to the hospital was false," Rosen said.

???The alleged victims were required to take off their clothes and cover themselves in the mixture, according to Buffalo Police. The students involved in the incident were reportedly pledging the off-campus fraternity ATO, the former Alpha Tau Omega, removed from the list of recognized fraternities by UB in 2002.

???O'Shea, a former staff writer of The Spectrum, reportedly slammed the door on the police. He is now facing charges of obstruction of governmental administration. Rosen is also facing a charge for the possession of marijuana.

???"The national organization has asked the involved individuals to cease and desist from using the organization's name and symbols without authorization," Goldbaum stated in the press release.

???According to the Office of Greek Affairs' Statement on Hazing, any action that is induced "to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule."

???Any student who is engaged in these actions, according to the statement from University Communications, will be immediately suspended from the university.

???"It was just a misunderstanding. It was not hazing; everyone [who] was accused of being hazed will sign a statement. This was all a big misunderstanding," Rosen said.

The Buffalo Police are investigating this incident and the students have been referred to the Student-Wide Judiciary.
