"'Poseur saints' taint Christianity, evangelism"

Letter to the editor

I am not bothered to admit that evangelism is an integral part of religion to at least some Christians. I believe very strongly in the free will of religion and believe this applies to everyone, regardless of affiliation. Faith is a powerful tool in healing and hope. After seeing my late mother struggle through cancer with only the hope of religion to comfort her days, I am a definite proponent of faith.

This right becomes license, unfortunately, when it enables poseur saints to wage psychological blitzkrieg on non-believers. Is it absolutely necessary to engage the downtrodden, the severely depressed and the "down and out" of our society with these outlandish Christian recruiting tactics? Must people within our society be faced with the threat of hell every time a Pat Robertson troll verbally mauls them?

To that "online reader" and anyone else who believes evangelism is within any type of moral or sensible bounds: Wake up! In much of your antics, the underlying message is that people within the "faith" sit lofted above anyone else, regardless if that person may have fewer faults than the evangelist itself. And it must be the fault of us "liberals" that this is an issue.

So far, bad evangelists have managed to turn devout believers away from religion, prey on the severely disadvantaged of society, drag the good name of "Christianity" through the mud and on top of that, claim your deeds of recruitment as selfless, yet post your recruitment numbers on Web sites and church boards as if you were a second grade elementary class and the kid with the most stickers gets a big lollypop at the end of the month.
