Athletes of the Week announced
The athletics department announced that sophomore guard Eric Moore of the men's basketball team and Mary Veith of the cross-country team were Athletes of the Week.
Moore recorded a career-high 20 point game for the Bulls in the season-opening 72-69 victory over Canisius. He hit a career-best four three pointers and had four assists while he played a career-high 33 minutes in only his fourth start of his short career. The point guard was also perfect from the free throw line.
Veith earned All-Northeast honors with her 18th-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regionals this past weekend in the Bronx, N.Y. She ran the 6K race in a time of 21:56.7, which improved her time from last season by a minute. Veith is the third Buffalo runner in the last three years to earn this honor. It is the first time both Buffalo athletes have been dubbed with this honor.
Women's basketball adds two players
The women's basketball head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald in her second year at Buffalo announced a pair of players who have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball for the Bulls during the 2007-2008 season. Jessica Fortman and Tieara Jones will each play basketball and attend Buffalo next year.
Fortman is a 6-foot tall forward from Ashland, Ky. She is listed as a forward but can play in the guard position as well. Last season at Russell High School, Fortman averaged 17.5 points per game, shot .564 from the field and converted on 150 of her 266 attempts.
The forward also finished the season with eight three-point field goals and finished .722 from beyond the stripe. Additionally, she averaged seven rebounds per contest and recorded 80 assists and 52 steals.
Jones is a 5-foot 11-inch forward known for good athleticism from Youngstown, Ohio. Jones led her team in high school to a third seed in last season's Division II District Championships in Ohio. Her team was eventually defeated in the semifinals. In a game earlier that season, against Central Hower, Jones recorded 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
Both women are the first to sign letters of intent to play next year for the women's basketball team.
