Buffalo signs Florida standout for '08 recruiting class

Head football coach Turner Gill added wide receiver Antavious Wilson from Pahokee, Florida becoming the 22nd member of the Bulls class of 2008. Wilson helped his team win back-to-back and undefeated in his last two seasons. Wilson, 6'-2', 182 pounds, was a first team All-State selection. Wilson had over 900 yards receiving including 10 touchdown catches.

Turner Gill added, "We are excited to get a player of Antavious' ability, He comes from one of the premier high school programs in the nation and excelled against very strong competition. He has good size and speed, makes plays, and has ability to make someone miss after a catch." Wilson plans on pursuing a major in management while attending UB.

Scott and Turner named 2008 All-American Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year

The National Strength and Conditioning Association awarded All-American awards to some of Buffalo's finest, Defensive End Trevor Scott and Midfielder/Forward Ashley Turner. They are the first Buffalo athletes to receive the award. Scott, earned second-team All-MAC honors and finishing second in the Defensive Player of the Year. An NFL draft prospect, Scott finished this year with 46 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, and 10 sacks. Ashley Turner, earned the soccer team's Most Improved Player Award, while being a team captain.

The NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year Award program recognizes those athletes whose athletic accomplishments reflect their dedication to strength and conditioning. Thy also are recognized for their academic and personal accomplishments as well as their integrity as student athletes.

Ceremonial first pitch to be thrown by former Bulls

The Bulls baseball team will honor past members of the program prior to each Saturday home game. John Buszka, Dennis Howard and Bill Monkarsh will throw out the ceremonial first pitches prior to Saturday home games.

Buszka, a member of the UB Athletic Hall of Fame, will throw the first pitch before a contest against Miami (OH) on April 19. He led the nation in hitting during the 1976 season.

Prior to a match against Akron on April 26, the Bulls will honor Howard by giving him the privilege of throwing the first pitch. The Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round drafted Howard after his Buffalo career in 1980. He holds second place in Buffalo career history with five shutouts thrown.

When Ohio visits Buffalo on May 17, Monkarsh will have the honor in throwing the first pitch for that match. Monkarsh was head coach of the Buffalo baseball program from 1968-81. In that span, he compiled a record of 302-208-4. Monkarsh is most known for coaching the team who pulled off one of the greatest upsets in school history as the Bulls defeated second-ranked Miami (FL).
