UB Athletics weekend preview

After a week when all the excitement in UB Athletics came off the court, the UB teams are preparing for a busy weekend. Here's a quick recap of the week and a preview of what is coming up.

Men's basketball

Just a day after Athletic Director Danny White announced Bobby Hurley as the new head coach, the Bulls' No. 1 recruit - Shannon Evans - announced he was recommitting.

Evans decommitted after Reggie Witherspoon was fired but reached out to Hurley via Twitter after his hiring. About an hour later, Evans announced he is coming to Buffalo to play basketball in the fall.

Hurley's hiring made a splash in sports media and he will have a chance to prove himself as a coach right away with four returning starters, including All-Mid-American Conference junior forward Javon McCrea.

Baseball

The baseball team won its season opening series last weekend against Central Michigan but lost to Canisius on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulls (12-11, 2-1 MAC) will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., next to take on Western Michigan in their first road conference series.

The Broncos are one of the top teams in the MAC West division and feature one of the top pitching staffs in the conference. The Bulls lost both games they played against Western Michigan last season.

The first game of the series will take place on Friday at 3 p.m.

Women's tennis

The women's tennis team will put its undefeated record on the line again this weekend as the Bulls (10-0) travel to Miami Ohio (4-12, 0-1 MAC) and Ball State (10-7, 1-0 MAC) for two conference matches.

The Bulls were able to easily beat Northern Illinois (14-2, 0-2 MAC) 6-1 last weekend, but this weekend's slate of two games will offer a more difficult challenge. Friday's match against Miami Ohio is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Softball

The softball team will host Akron and Ohio this weekend in its opening conference games. The Bulls finished their non-conference slate with a record of 5-17; all of those games were played away from Buffalo.

The Bulls will play two against Akron on Friday and games against Ohio on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on Friday is slated for 1 p.m.

Track and field

The track and field team will travel to Toledo to compete in the Toledo Collegiate Challenge. The meet is a two-day event and the Bulls will be looking to build off their strong winter season, as they get closer to the MAC Outdoor Championships.

The meet starts at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Rowing

The rowing team will compete for the second weekend in a row - this time traveling to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Murphy Cup.

Last weekend, the Bulls recorded two victories and will look to continue that success this weekend.
