The State University at Buffalo will launch its first study abroad program this summer in Barcelona, Spain, the University's Office of International Education announced today.
Students from throughout the United States and Canada who have completed the second year level of college Spanish prior to June, 1967, and have a record of "creditable achievement" are eligible for consideration in the "Program de Estudios Hispanicos" (Program of Spanish Studies) which will be held June 28–August 16.
It is hoped that between 25 and 40 students will participate this year, according to Miss Judith A. Falconer, assistant to the director of the Office of International Education and arranger of the program. Dr. Leon Livingstone, professor of Spanish and associate chairman of the University's Department of Modern Language, is program director.
The six-week session will include intermediate and advanced language studies as well as courses in Spanish literature. All classes will be held in Barcelona's Escuela de Bibliotecarias (The School of Librarians), and the facilities of the City's Central Library, built in the fifteenth Century, will also be available to students.
Heading the all-Spanish faculty and staff is Professor Guillermo Diaz-Plaja, director of the Instituto Nacional del Libro Espanol (Association of Spanish Book Publishers). Professor Diaz-Plaja served as a visiting professor of Spanish at the State University at Buffalo during the 1964-1965 academic year.
The first Barcelona program will feature five guest lecturers: Jose Manuel Blecua of the University of Barcelona, Professor Diaz-Plaja, novelist Jose Maria Gironella, philosopher Julian Marias of the Royal Spanish Academy, and playwright Alfonso Sastre.
Other plans include: additional, more informal meetings with writers, intellectuals and artists; visits to museums, galleries, and historical sites; and several student excursions, including a post session tour of Madrid and its environs.
Participants in the program will reside in modern university dormitories near the school.
Cost for the six-week session is approximately $750. This includes round trip air transportation from New York City, full room and board, weekend trips and a post-session tour. Tuition is extra and ranges from $90-$170 depending upon the number of courses taken.
A limited number of partial undergraduate scholarships and graduate assistantships are available, Miss Falconer said.
Further inquiries concerning the program should be directed to Dr. Leon Livingstone, Crosby Hall, State University of New York at Buffalo, New York 14214.
