Friday night the UB Women’s Soccer team (3-2-1, 0-1-0 MAC) fell 1-0 to the Eastern Michigan Eagles (2-3-2, 1-0-0 MAC) in their conference opener. It was the Eagles’ first win over the Bulls since 2019, despite Buffalo controlling much of the game and generating numerous scoring chances.

The opening minutes saw Buffalo immediately assert themselves in the attacking third, pressing high and forcing turnovers in the midfield. The Bulls earned several early shots on goal as Eastern Michigan (EMU) struggled to settle into possession. Buffalo’s defensive shape also continued to impress, with a dominant three-back line limiting EMU’s forward play and junior goalkeeper Lexie Thompson commanding her box with confidence. Thompson would go on to be a vocal presence throughout the match.

Buffalo’s attack continued to build as the half went on and in the 30th minute, sophomore midfielder Carolyn Hinkle produced a dangerous shot on goal that forced a save, followed minutes later by a powerful strike from freshman forward Maddy Murphy that was denied with another diving save. The Bulls’ high press created many chances from EMU turnovers, and graduate forward Jasmine Guerber continued to shine as the playmaker in the No. 9 role. However, the finishing touch was missing for both teams going into the half

Just minutes into the second half, Eastern Michigan found space and fired a shot into the top of the net, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Buffalo pushed hard to equalize, with Guerber and senior midfielder Ashley Reyes both testing the keeper, while Thompson came up with another picture perfect diving save at the 77-minute mark. Just a minute later, Thompson again denied a dangerous cross, pulling the ball out of the air to prevent a second EMU goal.

The Bulls pressed high in the closing 15 minutes, with Guerber driving the attack and the back line holding firm against counters. The final 50 seconds brought a last wave of pressure, but Eastern Michigan’s defense held on to seal the result.

The Bulls return to action this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against Mid-American Conference opponent Miami University (OH), looking to bounce back and find their finishing touch. The game will take place at the UB Stadium and be streamed on ESPN+
