Fans of pirates, bright colors, and psychedelic electronica can finally rejoice.
MGMT, the duo of Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasse, finally released their first full-length debut Oracular Spectacular after being featured for some time on the free iTunes download list.
After meeting during their undergraduate days studying music at Wesleyan University, the two Brooklyn natives combined forces to create a new, experimental electronic rock that sounds so out there, even Bjork would be lost.
Using a variety of melodies and electronically composed harmonics, MGMT is able to express their anti-Lindsey Lohan, Kimberly Stewart lifestyles with their lead anathematic single "Time to Pretend."
"I'm Feelin rough I'm Feelin raw I'm in the prime of my life/Let's make some music make some money find some models for wives/I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin and f*** with the stars/You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars."
Illustrating the group's flare for experimentation, Spectacular is a unique combination of rhythmic beats, methodic melodies, and typical post-teenage angst that fuels their lyrics and draws in their audience.
Known for their indie sound and fan base, MGMT makes sure to not stray too far from their roots by continuing to play small venues, despite being signed to major label Columbia Records.
Collaborating with producer Dave Fridmann, the band was able to integrate new elements into the electronic line-up. Bringing in instrumentals, such as drums and bass, adds depth and works as a sustainable platform for the duo to incorporate and intertwine their characteristic musical elements.
Anyone looking for a relaxing electronica album should look into MGMT, although their weirdness isn't very welcoming to the casual music listener. Oracular Spectacular was released nationwide Jan. 22 and is now available in stores.
