Marshall swimmers may have been suffering from nightmares after senior Abby Delia and the Bulls (3-2, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) left town Friday night.
The Bulls left Huntington with a 188-110 victory Friday night against the Thundering Herd (2-3, 1-3 MAC), with UB setting five pool records.
Delia set the tone and accounted for three records herself, in sweeping both the 100- and 200-meter backstroke races with times of 59.83 and 2:13.79 respectively.
Overall, the Bulls captured nine of the sixteen events and finished strong by setting another Marshall facility record in the meet's final contest.
The 2003 MAC swimmer of the year Jennefer Brankovsky, who earlier in the day established an individual record in the 500-freestyle, was joined by Kahla Walkinshaw, Frances Stephenson and Jolie Pun to put an exclamation mark on the victory with a time of 3:38.09 in the 400-freestyle relay.
Bulls Suffer One-Point Loss
After UB's record-breaking victory Friday night, the Bulls were pulled back down to earth Saturday in Athens, Ohio, when they were dealt a heart breaking loss by a score of 122-121 to the Ohio Bobcats (4-0, 4-0 MAC).
It may have been the fatigue from swimming on back-to-back nights, or any number of other factors, but the Bulls fell behind early Saturday to the Bobcats.
Buffalo trailed by 35 points with four events left before staging their Olympic-sized comeback, which was ignited by Brankovsky's 500-freestyle victory. Kim LaHaye, Tracy Hoover and Ashlee Burton all followed suit by seizing the top three spots in the three-meter diving competition to cut the deficit to 21.
With just two events left, the Bulls again sliced into the lead by outscoring Ohio 15-4 with Danielle Gervais, and freshmen Julie Marcotte and Stefanie Nochisaki grasping the first, second and fourth in the 200 breaststroke.
Entering the final event the Bulls had a chance for victory, but the Bobcats just edged out the Bulls "B" team in the 200 freestyle relay to snatch the second spot (UB hauled in first place) which allowed the Bobcats to avert a meltdown and escape with the victory.
UB's fall semester portion of the season came to a close against Ohio, and their play will resume on January 10 at the Islamorada Invitational in Islamorada, Fla.
