A little lovin' at UB

With an enormous student body and a consistently packed Student Union, UB can be one of the best or one of the most intimidating places to meet that special someone. Luckily for undergraduates, activities, clubs and classes can also provide the opportunity to meet a sober someone for something more than a one-night stand.

The first place some start looking is the Student Union, which offers a constant flow of activities that bring students together. These activities provide opportunities to meet possible dates outside the realm of academia. Offering late-night activities that can provide an alternative to the bar scene, students should try searching for a significant-other at movie screenings, Texas Hold 'Em tournaments, or even while catching a quick bite to eat at Putnam's.

Chris Clay, a senior communications major, feels that class is also a golden opportunity to meet co-eds, and make that study-buddy permanent.

"I actually met my girl that way," Clay said. "We've been together ever since."

Class offers many that big chance to suggest hanging out to "study," which could remain just that, or turn into something more. It's a safe way to suggest to someone that you should get together some lazy afternoon - when your roommate conveniently happens to be gone.

While many consider the bar scene to be an easy way to meet other students, often romantic endeavors that begin over shots of tequila only end in disaster.

"Sometimes, if you meet someone when they're out at a party, they may not completely be who they normally are," Clay said. "If you meet someone in a class, you have a better chance at seeing them when they're not in party mode."

Clubs and other campus organizations are also a great way to meet that potential stud with interests other than partying, or a chick you can bring home to mom and dad. With over 100 clubs ranging from figure skating to Tae Kwon Do, UB clubs can be a great way to find people who are interested in doing the same things as you.

"At least in a club you can find a guy who enjoys doing the same stuff that you like to do, instead of dinging a guy who is a complete opposite and you have nothing in common," said Amy Snyder, a senior communications major.

Notwithstanding these sometimes-foolproof locations for meeting a mate, many student are still looking to meet someone. Try looking at the mall, in the parking lot, or even on the shuttle.

"Dating at UB can be a great experience," said Bob Ow, a graduate student studying social work. "You just have to put yourself out there and when you do meet a nice girl, don't take her to Jim's Stakeout. The whole point is definitely to be classy, not trashy."
