Zipping by the Bulls
Four victories in a 16 events equaled a loss for the women's swimming team on Saturday as the Akron Zips came to the UB Natatorium.
Junior Kahla Walkinshaw won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:45.31 with fellow UB Bull junior Eugenie Viale coming in at second with a time of 10:51.31. Freshman Rachel Sorg made an impact in the water, winning the 200-yard backstroke in 2:11.27. Only .03 seconds separated first-place-finishing junior Danielle Garvais from an Akron swimmer in the 200-yard breaststroke. The 800-yard freestyle comprised of Walkinshaw, Sorg and seniors Olga Wojcik and Jackie English took first place in the squad first attempt in the event with a time of 7:57.92.
Next up for the Bulls is Toledo at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.
First-year forward earns conference acclaim,/b>
Freshman Brooke McCalla of the women's soccer team was named to the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman team on Thursday after thriving this season at forward.
McCalla was tied for third in the conference in scoring while playing in 13 games and starting 11. Unfortunately for both the team and the Pickering, Ontario native, injuries had her sidelined for the final five games.
Homeboy passes 100
UB grappler Kyle Cerminara recorded his 100th career win over the weekend at the Slippery Rock Open, moving into second position in the UB record books for wins.
Cerminara won five matches at the tournament en route to the title in the 197-pound class. Cerminara, who is ranked among the best in the nation in various polls, is now just 10 wins behind Gary Cooper's record of most wins at UB with 113.
