The Eastern Section of the Professional Tennis Registry selected Kathy Twist, the head coach of the Buffalo Bulls women's tennis team, as the 2002 PTR-Eastern Coach of the Year. The ceremony where she received the reward was held on Jan. 18 in White Plains, N.Y.
Twist led the Bulls to a 5-1 dual meet record in the fall, which was their best start since 1998. She received the prestigious award for developing not only good players but also outstanding citizens, a mantra in her coaching philosophy.
UB's women's track star Biaunca McFarland was selected as the MAC Female Co-athlete of the week, which was announced on Monday.
McFarland broke her own school record in the triple jump at the Cornell Five-Way on Saturday. But more importantly, her jump of 41-7 allowed her to attain an NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the triple jump.
Along with McFarland, who was named the UB female athlete of the week, Steve Esler of the men's track and field team was named the male athlete of the week.
Esler scored a school record 3,933 points in the pentathlon at the Cornell Five-Way, which in turn qualified him for the USATF National Indoor Championships. The mark blew away his own former record by almost 350 points, and it was the seventh highest score in league history. It is the highest this season in the MAC, and the fifth highest nationally.
