The independent student publication of The University at Buffalo, since 1950

A newspaper without room is still a community's responsibility

What does it mean to support student journalism beyond praising it on special occasions?

This letter remains in the condition of which it is sent.

The Spectrum's reporting about changes to its Student Union space raises a question every university should consider: what does it mean to support student journalism beyond praising it on special occasions?

A student newsroom is not simply a place to store desks. It is where young journalists compare notes, challenge assumptions, learn to correct mistakes and begin making sense of the institution around them. When a university changes that space, the practical effects deserve the same attention as any other change to student life.

Of course, campus buildings serve many needs. Administrators must balance competing claims for limited space. A college newspaper should be willing to report those tradeoffs honestly. But students also deserve a clear explanation of why a decision was made and whether the alternative allows the publication to operate effectively.

An independent student newspaper will sometimes make an institution uncomfortable. That is not a sign of failure. The paper's responsibility is to its readers, and readers benefit when journalists can ask questions freely, check claims and offer corrections when they get something wrong.

My Christian faith values truth spoken with humility. Jesus challenged authority, but he also taught that how we treat one another matters. The combination suggests that honest scrutiny and basic respect are not enemies.

Students can help preserve that culture by reading beyond the headlines, supporting classmates who report difficult stories and responding with evidence rather than personal insults when they disagree. Administrators can demonstrate confidence by making decisions understandable and leaving room for independent questions.

A newsroom may be relocated. Its work should never be treated as incidental.

The most meaningful way to honor the next generation of journalists is to make sure they have the space, access and freedom required to do journalism that matters.
