Early on, it was evident to me that I had a passion for learning new things. Using YouTube as my teacher, I was always picking up a new hobby. I've been a makeup artist, a hair stylist, a fashion designer, a dancer, a singer, a content creator, a photographer and now, a Spectrum Multimedia Editor.
Although they each have their own significance in my story, having the opportunity to work as a Multimedia Editor has been one of the most fulfilling experiences throughout my journey.
To be completely transparent, I initially joined ENG 394 my junior year because I knew it would fulfill my writing requirement for my degree and I heard it was a lower maintenance course. Looking back, I am eternally grateful that I found this course and it has been a privilege to be a part of The Spectrum. This course has given me so many fun and memorable opportunities that I will never take for granted. If I could start over as a freshman, I would have joined this course a lot earlier.
I’m no stranger to a camera. From a very young age, I was always talking, singing, and even dancing in front of one. I found it fascinating to document my life through a lens, it’s always been my favorite form of self expression. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve channeled that passion into various social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, where I showcase different aspects of my life. I’ve been able to turn this little “hobby” of mine into a brand for myself and for different organizations, including The Spectrum.
The Spectrum gave me the space to express myself creatively. Every good story needs a captivating picture to draw you in. This is why I found myself so drawn to the multimedia desk. These editors are creating these amazing stories, filled with detail, emotion, and a central idea. It was my job to tell that story through one single picture. This is something that has always intrigued me as someone who loves working with a camera. When I’m creating content for myself, I’ve come to learn the importance of drawing in the audience right off the bat. Individuals won’t even give a story/picture/video the time of day if they aren't pulled in by what they're seeing. I love that it was my responsibility to take that perfect picture to add to the story and draw the audience in.
With that being said, I wouldn't have any of this responsibility if it weren't for the amazing editors of each desk creating these inspiring stories. It’s been a privilege to work for so many talented writers who truly bring The Spectrum to life. Thank each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication.
Thank you to The Spectrum for putting me in such unforgettable spaces. I mean, not many people can say they were courtside during every basketball game, or on the field with the football team, or even in the same room shaking hands with Kevin Olusola, a member of the Pentatonix. I have connected with so many fascinating people and had so many unique experiences, each fueling my passion for this type of work.
Most importantly, thank you Spectrum for validating that little girl inside me, who loved picking up her little camera and documenting her life. I know she would be proud.
Goodbye for now.
