For UB men’s basketball player Tim Oboh, this past season was defined by resilience.
“Having good performances after bad performances… showed our ability to bounce back from hardships.”
Oboh’s mindset speaks directly to what many people outside of the program don't see: the intense work behind the scenes.
“I think a lot of times people just think we’re not trying, but the truth is, when we play, blood, sweat and tears go into every single game,” said Oboh.
Throughout the season, Oboh didn't necessarily see his role change; instead, he grew into it. With multiple high-scoring performances, including 20-point games, Oboh demonstrated his ability to step up and take control of the game when needed.
For Oboh, improvement wasn't just defined by the stats.
“I think the way I saw the game evolved over time,” Oboh said, “Understanding how defensive schemes work and how I can exploit that offensively — and vice versa — was a big step for me.”
This analytical approach became especially important during one of the toughest stretches of the season — a string of losses. He believed that this challenge wasn't as physically demanding as it was mentally.
“It almost feels like you’re not getting a return on investment — you’re putting in all this work, and the results aren’t showing it,” explained Oboh. But instead of letting this frustration affect him, he focused on something else: effort, energy and grit.
“For me, it was about controlling what I could control and not letting my energy or effort dip just because the scoreboard wasn’t reflecting what I felt it should,” he said.
These close losses added another layer of mental toughness.
“It’s about understanding what you can learn from the losses, but not letting them define you,” Oboh said.
If he had to describe the teams’ identity, it would be “grit.” Oboh states that this team has made it a priority to remain resilient, regardless of the circumstances.
That mindset goes beyond the court as well. Even while watching March Madness, Oboh watches the games with a critical focus on growth.
“I’m just trying to watch good basketball… see what the best teams do and why they succeed.”
Looking forward, he believes that the potential of a further run is there. With continued improvement and even stronger team chemistry, the Bulls can build towards something even bigger. With a mindset rooted in growth, Oboh is focused on what comes next.
“You just have to keep getting better every day and trust the work you’re putting in.”
