As of right now, both of Buffalo’s tennis programs have phenomenal records, with the men sitting at 13-6, 7-2 MAC and the women at 18-4, 5-0 MAC. With regular season play winding down and MACs right around the corner the women took home a 6-1 victory over Toledo (8-8, 3-2 MAC) on Friday. The men carried that momentum into Saturday where they defeated University of Illinois, Chicago (6-12, 0-8 MAC) 7-0 on their senior day.
The women’s win on Friday started off with a strong doubles performance from the pair of sophomore Sarah Hartel and junior Julia Laspro, which produced a 6-2 win, helping the Bulls clinch the doubles point for the day. In the singles competition, senior Esmee Anderson won her two matches to win the first singles which set in motion an undefeated day on singles play for the Bulls.
Moving on to the men’s competition at home, the Bulls swept the day 7-0. The day started with a 6-2 win for the doubles team of senior Theodoros Mitsakos and graduate student Clement Mainguy. This pair would later be named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Doubles Team of the Week — the fifth time the pair has earned this honor. The team then rolled through singles play with a series of straight-set wins that locked up the match early and finished the day with a clean sweep.
As of right now, the men’s team is tied for first in the MAC rankings and has already qualified for competition in the MAC championships with one regular season competition on Saturday, April 11th against Toledo (7-14, 2-7 MAC), in Toledo, OH.
The women’s MAC championship will take place the weekend after the men’s, and they still have three more regular season match ups to go. Their next competition is against Bowling Green University (7-11,1-4 MAC) in Bowling Green, OH.
