Bulls Stand Out in New Haven

Bulls men’s tennis excel at ITA New England Regional Championships

Men’s tennis competed in the ITA New England Regional Championships this past weekend at Yale University. Two players advanced to the Round of 16 in the singles draw. All three doubles pairings advanced to the Round of 16. 

Action began Thursday, when junior Michael Malkin and junior Minjae Kim won their matches in the open singles qualifying draw, advancing to the main draw. Malkin defeated his Bryant University Bulldog opponent  6-4, 6-1, and Yale’s opponent after a dropped first set of 4-6 to win 7-6, 10-8. Kim beat Colgate’s Jerome Falcon 6-0, 6-1 and Boston College opponent 6-1, 6-3. 

The singles main draw opened Friday, where graduate student Clement Mainguy defeated his Sacred Heart University opponent  6-2, 7-6, junior Onder Balci defeated his Niagara University opponent 6-2,  6-1, and senior Theodores Mitsakos defeated LeMoyne’s University 6-3, 6-2. Senior Faiz Nasyam, senior Emiliano Jorquera and Malkin lost in the singles main draw opening round. Mainguy and Mitsakos advanced to the Round of 16.

Friday hosted the first round of doubles, where the Bulls went undefeated. Nasyam partnered with Jorquera to top a Yale pairing 9-7. Malkin with Kim beat a St. Bonaventure pairing 8-5 and Mitaskos with Mainguy to beat a Boston College pairing 8-3. All three doubles pairings advanced to the Round of 16. 

Bulls men’s tennis resumes next weekend at the Mid-American Conference Fall Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, MI.
