Thursday night the UB Women’s Soccer (4-1-1, 0-0-0 MAC) team defeated the Mercyhurst Lakers (0-7-1, 0-0-0 NEC) 4-1 in a one sided affair at UB Stadium. The Bulls remain undefeated at home going into conference play.

From the opening whistle, the Bulls were in control of the game. Buffalo found themselves constantly in the attacking third, leading to early shots on goal by junior midfielder Laiken Kaiser and sophomore forward Carolyn Hinkle, forcing saves out of the Mercyhurst Goalkeeper.

In the 25th minute, senior defender Ellie Simmons floated a cross into the Mercyhurst box. Confusion between a defender and the goalkeeper led to an own goal, breaking the deadlock with the Bulls leading 1-0. The scoring continued when senior midfielder Ashley Reyes found a pass from fellow Senior midfielder Marissa Foster. Reyes lashed a shot from 25 yards out that looped over the goalkeeper to find the back of the net, doubling the Bulls lead to 2-0 going into halftime.

The start of the second half saw Mercyhurst come out strong, getting a goal five minutes into the half to make it 2-1. Buffalo quickly responded with a goal of their own. In the 59th minute, Simmons lofted a free kick into the box which found the head of 5th year defender Frederique St.-Jean to make it 3-1. Another own goal during the waning moments of the game made it 4-1 in favor of the Bulls. That scoreline would be the same when the game ended, sending the fans home happy.

The Bulls go away for their first conference clash on Thursday, September 18 against Eastern Michigan at Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti, Michigan at 4:30 p.m.
