Amherst Police block entrance to Flickinger Court, just off the intersection between Sweet Home and Chestnut Ridge roads, during a four and a half hour long negotiation Sunday night.

Officers from University Police (UPD), Amherst Police and the New York State Police negotiated with a driver “in distress” for four and a half hours at the intersection of Chestnut Ridge and Sweet Home roads — just outside UB’s Flickinger Court apartments — Sunday night, university officials told The Spectrum

The unnamed driver, with no UB affiliation, was pulled over by UPD due to vehicle and traffic violations. When officers approached the vehicle, the individual briefly exited the vehicle and pulled out a knife. He then immediately returned to his vehicle and threatened to harm himself, beginning a four-and-a-half hour long standoff.

Nearby roadways were temporarily blocked off as a precaution.

UPD, with assistance, apprehended the individual shortly after 2:00 a.m. Monday morning. The driver was transported to the Erie County Medical Center for further evaluation.

Charges are pending.
