The reinstatements are among hundreds of visa terminations the Trump administration reversed, following lawsuits and court-issued restraining orders

All 17 current and former UB students’ immigration status was restored by the federal government last weekend, just about three weeks after the federal government suddenly terminated their visas — some over minor traffic violations and others for reasons unknown.

Seven UB students are currently enrolled and 10 are recent graduates.

Five current and two former students had their records reactivated last Friday in the Student and Visitor Exchange System, a database through which the federal government monitors international students. University officials confirmed Monday that the rest were restored over the weekend.

The university continues to provide resources and advise affected students on academic plans, UB officials say.

The restorations come as the Trump administration backtracks hundreds of its more than 1,800 student visa revocations, following over 100 lawsuits from affected students and dozens of court-issued restraining orders.

Among those are recent UB graduate Kiran Manjunatha and postdoctoral student by the initials of P.V. in a lawsuit filed April 18. Manjunatha was charged with a minor traffic violation due to driving without a license in Indiana in 2021, while P.V. was previously convicted on two DUI-related offenses in 2017-2018.
