The UB women’s tennis team (20-7, 5-5 MAC) defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies 4-1in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) tournament finals to earn their fourth conference title in program history, and the first since 2018.
After defeating Miami (OH) (10-10, 5-3 MAC) in the semis this past Thursday, the Bulls went into their showdown with NIU as the No. 4 seed in the tournament and secured the upset win over the top seeded Huskies.
Buffalo secured a hard-fought doubles point after following a 6-3 win in third doubles and when senior Esmee Andreson and freshman Maria Glowacka secured a 7-6 tiebreaker in a come-from-behind win to give the Bulls the opening point.
Their lead would be extended after freshman Blanca Berges and graduate Jagmeet Kaur won their singles matches before freshman Liv Roestel sealed the title for the Bulls with a 6-4, 7-5 win in the fifth singles match. Roestel and Kaur were later named to the All-tournament team.
With the MAC title secured, UB has now earned themselves a spot in the NCAA tournament and will face off against Ohio State (21-3, 12-1 Big 10) in the first round this Friday at 1 p.m.
