This weekend, softball (12-28, 7-12 MAC) took on the Toledo Rockets (14-26, 7-12 MAC) in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play. The Bulls brought two wins on Saturday, with scores of 21-14 and 8-2, and dropped one game 1-3 on Sunday afternoon. The team’s performance broke five records and tied another.
The first game of the weekend took place at 1 p.m. on Nan Harvey Field, where the Bulls broke six program records during the three-hour, 51-minute matchup. UB broke four team records, including most runs scored in a single game, most Runs Batted In (RBI) in a single game, most runs scored in a single inning and most walks in a single game.
The Bulls set their first record in the opening inning, scoring 11 runs on four hits. The previous record was nine runs, also set against Toledo in 2012. Junior first baseman Abbey Nagel hit her first home run of the game, driving in two to give the Bulls a quick lead.
UB extended their advantage in the second and third innings, including a two-run homer by junior catcher Lily Lauck that scored sophomore utility Reagan Terwilliger. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth inning.
Toledo worked on a comeback in the fifth and sixth innings but couldn’t close the gap. UB brought the score to 21-14 in the bottom of the sixth after plating four runs, breaking the program record for most runs scored in a single game.
The team also broke the record of most RBI in a single game. The previous records – 19 runs and 18 RBI – were both set in a game against Southern University in 2014. The sixth inning saw Nagel hit her second home run, tying the record for most home runs in a game. The homer also brought in Terwilliger, who set a new program record for most runs scored in a single game with five.
The Bulls added one more team record by drawing 12 walks, surpassing the previous high of 10 set against Akron in 2021.
UB carried that momentum into its second Saturday game, claiming an 8-2 win, but couldn’t complete the sweep, falling 3-1 on Sunday.
Softball returns to action on Wednesday, April 23, with a doubleheader against the Canisius Golden Griffins (21-18, 11-6 MAAC) starting at 1 p.m.
