Women’s soccer (1-0, 0-0 MAC) won 6-1 in dominant fashion over the Mercyhurst Lakers (0-1, 0-0 PSAC) Sunday afternoon at the Murchie Family Fieldhouse.

The Bulls’ poise on defense and offense helped them pull out the big win at the end. UB consistently kept the ball on Mercyhurt’s side of the field and tired out their defense with long offensive possessions. UB turned in a solid defensive performance as well, preventing any consistent offense from the Lakers with steady pressure on the ball.

The Bulls set the tone in the first period with a brace from senior forward Jasmine Guerber, ending the half with a 2-0 Bulls lead.

UB didn’t slow down there, as senior midfielder Ashleigh Fortunate and fifth-year defender Olivia Bizzoni both netted in the second period. Fortunate scored her second goal of the game to put the Bulls up 5-0 in the final period with 15 minutes to go.

As a last-ditch effort, the Lakers were able to score a header with 10 minutes left, but gave up an own goal with six minutes left, leaving the scoreboard at 6-1 at the final whistle.

With aggression and vigor on display during their first game, the team looks capable of having a strong spring season that can jump-start next year’s regular season.

UB’s next game will again be at Murchie Family Fieldhouse on Sunday, March 3 to play Ontario NDC. Kick off is at 1 p.m.
