Buffalo’s hardcore revival has not shown any signs of slowing down.
Following their first handful of shows and the release of their demo tape last year, hardcore newbloods Selfish Act have been making a lot of noise in the Buffalo scene and beyond. With their clear passion for the community and a bold take on hardcore, the band has established themselves as a group to keep an eye on.
Since their inception, the quintet has gained traction for their relentless gigging in various shows in and around the midwest and east coast. With each scorchingly energetic and unapologetically intense performance, Selfish Act channels their raw emotion and ignites mosh pits during every set they play.
Although they initially formed as a side project, they have come a long way in the few months that have passed since their formation.
Their most recent release, a two-song single titled “Promo ‘24,” and their aforementioned demo, serve as their introduction to the world of hardcore, with each member using their personal musical influences to craft their sound.
“Everyone [in the band] has different preferences for metal and hardcore,” David Wagner, a UB senior and drummer for Selfish Act, said. “From what I see, people like the music we make because of the wide range of styles — there’s a little something for everyone.”
Although Wagner is the permanent drummer for the group, he is currently studying abroad, rendering him unable to perform with his bandmates. Nonetheless, Selfish Act perseveres, continuing to play sets and build their reputation.
The band’s love for the genre and community is evident both on and off stage. Not only do they perform mere inches away from their fans (similar to most hardcore bands), members of Selfish Act are known to attendt and participate in various local shows.
“It’s almost a running joke that a Buffalo hardcore show will have someone from Selfish Act moshing,” Wagner said.
With an EP release slated for sometime later this year, Selfish Act looks to take advantage of their momentum and develop the community even further.
“We don’t know how our music will transform over time, but we plan on doing this for a while,” Wagner said. “We love hardcore and this band; it’s shaped who I am as a person.”
