UB remains open despite dangerously cold weather conditions

A wind chill advisory and frostbite warning was issued for Erie County

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory and frostbite warning for Erie County, which will remain in effect from 4 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Due to “wind chills as low as 15 to 20 below zero,” the advisory urges the community to stay indoors or to “cover all exposed skin” due to “potentially dangerous situations” while outdoors. The severe temperature drop could result in “frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.”

UB remains open, with all classes and events to continue as scheduled despite Buffalo Public Schools and organizations issuing closings for Friday, Feb. 3.

The university advised students in a Feb. 2 UB Alert to “use their best judgment and dress appropriately for the wintry conditions,”  providing a list of proper attire for the cold.

UB spokesperson John Della Contrada advised students to “minimize their outdoor exposure by traveling the indoor routes between buildings.”

Students who feel that they cannot safely get to class should notify instructors in writing with “as much advance as possible,” Della Contrada said.

He added if students cannot make it to their scheduled classes due to severe weather conditions, they will not be penalized but “are responsible for completing any assigned make-up work promptly.”

UB’s Parking and Transportation will be placing more buses in service in order to prevent disruptions and shorten wait times.

UB’s Environmental Health and Safety Unit has ensured they are “closely monitoring the situation,” though they do not anticipate scheduled operations to be disrupted.

UB’s emergency procedures site states “officials will continuously monitor campus conditions and communicate any changes as necessary.”
