UB’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is seeking to change the way its PharmD students get graded.

Incoming first-year students in UB’s PharmD degree program will experience an alternate “modified pass-fail” grading system that will allow them to “experience a more comprehensive and integrated approach to competency driven outcomes,” the school announced in an email last week.

The first-year (P1) class in 2022-23 — with an expected graduation date of 2026 — would be the first class to experience this grading system. Undergraduate coursework “will not be included” in the new grading system, according to the email.

SPPS will inform the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education — its accrediting body — once the school’s faculty have finalized an implementation plan.

The PharmD degree program — a graduate-level doctor of pharmacy program — is a four-year professional degree program that allows students to work as a pharmacist upon graduation.

UB has the state’s top-ranked and the nation’s 14th-ranked pharmacy program, according to U.S. News and World Report.
