UB’s Health Guidelines committee will meet Wednesday to discuss the CDC’s new mask guidelines.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday that New York will adopt the CDC’s new guidance, which states that fully vaccinated individuals may walk, run or bike alone without a mask.

The federal agency still urges wearing a mask in indoor and crowded outdoor areas, including at sports games and concerts. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the CDC, touted the benefits of getting vaccinated in a briefing Tuesday.

“Today is another day we can take a step back to the normalcy of before,” Walensky said. “Over the past year, we have spent a lot of time telling Americans what they cannot do, what they should not do. Today, I'm going to tell you some of the things you can do if you are fully vaccinated.”

The guidance also permits attending small outdoor gatherings with vaccinated family and friends and even attending small outdoor gatherings with a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

“This news underscores the fact that if you get vaccinated, more freedom is available to you, and I encourage all eligible New Yorkers who have not yet received the vaccine to make an appointment today,” Cuomo said.

Students, faculty and staff are currently required to wear masks indoors and outdoors at all times, even if they are physically distanced from others. The only exception is when students are inside their on-campus room or apartment.

It is unclear if UB officials will adopt the new guidance.

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to reflect that UB’s Health Guidance committee will only be discussing the CDC’s new mask guidance Wednesday, not the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
