Daniel Richter, a former UB student, will serve 24 months in prison for threatening to harm his former UB professor.

Richter was convicted of interstate communication of threat to injure.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office reports that Richter, 42, of Boulder, Colorado, was a student of the professor’s class at UB in 2002. He began stalking the professor in UB’s parking lots, following the woman to her car after class. At that time, Richter also sent the professor “bizarre emails.”

Although the former UB professor left Western New York in 2002 after her class with Ritcher ended, the harassment continued.

In 2007, Richter sent his former professor post-cards with “strange messages” and left harassing voicemails on her work phone. Richter was charged with fourth-degree stalking in 2008 and pleaded guilty to the charge in 2009.

In October of 2018, Richter addressed an envelope and a package to the professor’s former place of employment.

The professor reported to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office that the envelope contained a handwritten letter, three DVDs and an article. The package contained a letter, a CD and five DVDs.

Additionally, between November 1 and November 7, 2018, Richter left the professor over 100 harassing voicemail messages. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Richter left a voicemail saying he had, “been arrested 10 years ago and [was] willing to risk it happening again.”

After the calls, local courts issued a warrant for Richter’s arrest for Stalking in the Third Degree.

Authorities arrested Richter in the parking lot of a Comfort Inn in Illinois in Nov. 2018.
