Sophomore guard Malik Zachery has been suspended indefinitely from the UB men’s basketball program following his involvement in a fight with Canisius men’s basketball players during a pick-up game last Wednesday.

Zachery was charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a deadly weapon after allegedly stabbing a Canisius basketball player during a pick-up game at 875 Eggert Road in North Tonawanda. Other UB basketball players were playing with members of the Canisius basketball team when the altercation occurred.

Zachery was arrested Friday and is scheduled for a hearing in North Tonawanda City Court on Oct. 15.

UB said in a statement that Zacharey’s arrest is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, however they did not comment on whether his involvement in the game was a violation of the university’s COVID guidelines.

“Generally speaking, the university has an on-campus judiciary process to address violations of the university’s Student Code of Conduct. Serious violations of this code could lead to suspension from the University,” the statement read. “UB Athletics also has a process for addressing violations of student-athlete policies.”

Zachery is suspended from UB’s men’s basketball team but is still enrolled at the University at Buffalo.

This is a developing story.
