Buffalo has it’s first-ever Division I national champion.

Senior Jonathan Jones won gold in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday in Eugene, Oregon with a school-record throw of 20.78 meters. The throw came on Jones’ second attempt.

Penn State’s Darrell Hill matched Jones’ winning throw of 20.78 meters, but Jones’ first attempt was better than Hill’s second-best attempt.

After starting out at Division III Buffalo State College his freshman year, Jones has become one of the best throwers in the nation and a six-time All-American at UB.

The Bulls’ Ryan Billian and Mike Morgan also competed at the championships on Wednesday. Billian placed 20th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.41 and as of Wednesday night, Morgan was eighth in the decathlon.
