UB is no longer planning on purchasing McCarley Gardens, a low-income housing area located near Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
President Satish Tripathi told Common Council President Darius Pridgen Thursday that UB is not going to buy the property, according to The Buffalo News.
Reverend Michael Chapman, pastor of St. John Baptist Church, is the president of Oak-Michigan Housing Development Corporation, which owns the McCarley Gardens’ properties. Chapman was communicating with UB on the potential purchase.
UB’s decision not to buy McCarley Gardens was made at a meeting with Chapman and UB representatives Thursday. Neither party disclosed the reason for the deal not going through.
UB Foundation planned to buy McCarley Gardens but never said what UB wanted to do with the property. Residents of McCarley Gardens were concerned with where they were going to live if UB bought the area.
UBF told residents they would not have to move out of the complex before 2017, but many felt they were not given enough information about the potential sale at the time, according to The Buffalo News.
