Whenever I go on interviews and people ask what my major is, they seem very surprised by my answer. Why would a biochemistry major work for the newspaper? It seems like the last thing a student in such a field would do. I should be growing bacteria on Petri dishes.
I never thought I would join The Spectrum. I wish I could say I joined because I have a burning passion for writing, but the truth is, I saw an advertisement calling for staff writers and thought my time would be better spent doing something productive than watching videos all day long.
It was an unforgettable experience working as a staff writer. I am now more informed about the school and the events happening on campus. I've also gotten a lot more confident in my writing.
The best part is, I've learned about so many inspiring scientific projects at UB and gotten to talk to the brains behind these projects. Gaining a deeper understanding of what they do has made science less enigmatic and more relatable. It also makes me appreciate - and become more aware of - the scientific genius of researchers and how their work applies to our lives.
An accidental decision made in the spring semester of my freshman year has really transformed my college experience and helped me to gain so much. I love working in the lab but also have a lot of fun writing news stories. I'm really glad I found both.
