Concerts to brighten your winter

Anti-Flag

The punk legends return to the Town Ballroom on Jan. 31 with the 'Economy Sucks, Lets Party Tour.' These political punksters use their experience to sport one of the best live shows around. Also, with Aiden, Cancer Bats, and Star F*cking Hipsters in town, there is something to everyone's liking. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 if purchased the day of the show.

Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog comes to give Buffalo a nice shot of psychedelic rock on Feb. 1. Performing in the intimate Mohawk Place, this is sure to be one of the better shows in Buffalo over the next couple of months. Tickets are more than affordable at $13 in advance and $15 at the door. And don't worry, with the train station right next to Mohawk Place, you won't need a designated driver.

The Used

The Used revisits Western New York as they grace the recently reopened Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls on Feb. 16. Accompanied by metal superstars Atreyu, the show will have more dirty, greasy metalheads than a Disturbed show. Tickets are only $22, which is a steal for these two bands.

Furthur

The Grateful Dead's Bob Weir and Phil Lesh bring their parade of longhaired hippies through Shea's Performing Arts Center on Feb. 17. If your wallet can afford the $44 for balcony or $54 for orchestra seats, it's worth it to see the late Jerry Garcia's band mates.

Flogging Molly

You don't need to be Irish to appreciate one of the punk world's biggest acts. The 60-minute drive to Rochester to see Flogging Molly at the Main Street Armory on Feb. 28 is more than worth it. And with the amazing singer/songwriter Frank Turner opening, the $28 fee to get in is totally worth it. So go, enjoy a pint, and get into the Irish spirit before St. Patrick's Day.

Coheed and Cambria

Don't let the creepy high voice fool you: Coheed has one of the biggest cult followings in music and is poised to expand on that. They start off their North East club tour in Rochester at the Harro East Ballroom on March 23. With a live show that rivals any out there, a chance to see Coheed in such a small venue is a once in a lifetime opportunity. And tickets ($25 before the show, $28 day of the show) are reasonable for such a massive name (even though there is next to no chance of there being tickets on the day of the show.)

Passion Pit

These electronic rockers exploded onto the scene as their live show earned them a spot opening for bands like The Killers, RJD2, and Girl Talk. On March 28, Passion Pit brings their trip rock to the Town Ballroom. Tickets are $16 if you want the ticket before you go and only $18 on the day of the performance. With ticket prices that low, you should have plenty of money left over for the drugs you'll need for the show.

The Fall of Troy

These experimental rockers not only have vocals that can break glass, the guitars that escort the vocals through the songs are absolutely amazing. And unlike certain acts, the Fall of Troy can actually play their music. The Fall of Troy comes through Mohawk Place with Envy On The Coast on April 14. Although prices haven't been announced, since it's at Mohawk Place, tickets shouldn't break the bank.
