Fundraiser to be held for UB hit-and-run victim

A benefit to support the recovery of a UB graduate student who was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident in March will be held on April 23.

UB Career Services, Student Affairs and Campus Dining & Shops are sponsoring a benefit to support the recovery of Amy Stewart, a 22-year-old UB literacy graduate student, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in The Tiffin Room, located in the Student Union.

"All You Can Eat" is open to anyone who wants to attend, and will offer a buffet lunch for $10 per person, raffles, 50/50, entertainment and more.

All profits will be donated to Stewart's family to help cover the medical bills from the accident, according to Megan Pendergast, assistant director for part-time employment of UB Career Services and a close friend of the Stewart family.

Stewart and Rachel Baird, a 21-year-old Daemen College student, were struck by an SUV while attempting to cross Main Street near the Daemen campus on March 7. Baird suffered injuries to her chest and abdomen, but her condition was quickly upgraded to fair and she was discharged from Erie County Medical Center on March 18.

Stewart has been in a coma since the accident and is still listed as in critical condition at ECMC.

"[Stewart] is definitely making progress, becoming more responsive but her recovery will be a long road," Pendergast said. "[Stewart] is an extremely strong girl and is fighting hard. I've been so proud of her fight thus far."

Walk-ins for the fundraiser are welcomed and encouraged, yet early reservations for the event will also be accepted.

"The family is extremely grateful of the support UB has given," Pendergast said.
