'Make sure family and friends are aware of your itinerary'

Dear Students:

As many of you may have seen last week, the US Department of State issued a travel alert last week. It was focused on crime, violence and demonstrations in Mexico, which is a popular Spring Break destination for University students. (see http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3028.html).

Wherever your travel plans might take you next week, consider the following safety tips from security experts:

Yen Stay in Contact - Stay with your group, use a "buddy" system, keep your cell phone with you, along with your identification, and make sure family and friends are aware of your itinerary.

Yen Know the Rules - Different jurisdictions have standards; make sure you understand local culture and standards, and comply! If out of the country and facing difficulties, contact the nearest US Embassy.

Yen Stay on Path - Stick to the well traveled and populated routes and locations, avoiding potentially risky environments, and

Yen Stay in Control - Maintain control of yourself and your property by knowing your limits, avoiding risky behavior, and keeping your property safe.

Have a great Spring Break week, wherever you may spend it, but make it a smart and safe week!

Sincerely,

Dennis R. Black

Vice President for Student Affairs
