Grad student injured in hit and run

Two local college students, including a UB graduate student, were injured in a hit and run accident over spring break.

On March 7 at approximately 1:40 a.m., a vehicle struck Amy Stewart, a literacy graduate student, and Rachel Baird, a Daemen College student, while they were attempting to cross Main Street near the Daemen campus.

Stewart was taken to Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) where she remains comatose and in critical condition. Baird is also at ECMC and has been upgraded to fair condition since the accident.

On March 12, Andrea Glinski, 30, Tonawanda, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to use due care toward a pedestrian in relation to the incident.

Officers arrested Glinski after she took her black Jeep Liberty to a body shop for repairs.

Amherst police had alerted local car parts companies and body shops to be on the lookout for a vehicle matching that description. A clerk recognized the model of the car and notified police.

Glinksi openly admitted to police that her boyfriend told her to flee the scene after she struck the women.

She was released from jail on Tuesday afternoon after her family purchased a $250,000 bail bond.

"Amy and her family are in our thoughts during this difficult period and we hope for her full recovery and return to her studies," said university officials, in a press release.
