Tolerance or appeasement

European community avoids clash of ideals

Cultural lines have begun to blur left and right with the expanding global population. The result is a whole new host of problems stemming from the attempt to eliminate disagreement.

???Isn't the job of any immigrant to assimilate to the culture of his or her new country? While that should be a necessity, there is no need for these newcomers to rid themselves of their original heritage. If this were to happen, we wouldn't see the unique enclaves in such cities as New York City. Without Chinatown, Little Italy and Little Odessa, these neighborhoods would be bereft of diversity.

???Regardless, when you start to demand that your own cultural preferences overpower those already in place, you are crossing the line. In the United Kingdom, the Sharia Courts were sanctioned so judges could rule on a wide range of civil disputes ranging from financial arguments to divorce proceedings. The courts have no real authority to enforce laws, but are nevertheless followed by the Muslim community.

???It is alarming that many nations in Europe are appeasing these demands. Didn't they get the memo that the last time appeasement occurred, World War II began? As a people, we have become accustomed to doing the politically correct thing all the time.

???Nearly two years ago in Germany, which is made up of two million Muslim immigrants, honor killings occurred. The supposed crime that these victims committed was being in the company of men they were not married to. Simply, they were living like any German had the right to.

???It doesn't end in Europe. In Atlanta, a Muslim man was arrested for cutting off his 2-year-old daughter's clitoris. Just this past week in Orchard Park, Muzzammil Hassan was charged with the beheading of his wife after marital issues plagued their lives.

???While not all Muslims are acting this way, this is a serious issue that must be addressed. These waters are far too treacherous to be swimming in. We must stand up and advocate for change. A nation's laws should be the rule of the land - period. They should never be influenced by religion.

???There is a line that needs to be drawn between political correctness and human rights.
