New age of creative hair

???Mohawks, funky bobs, sleek bangs and lustrous layers are just some of the trends that are appearing on people's heads this winter.

???Whether one desires to be unique, popular, or to keep a low profile, creative hairstyles of the new age are becoming more abundant.

???"More textured haircuts are coming into style - men are starting to get longer, textured styles with rock or chic accents," said Megan Maroney, a hair stylist in North Tonawanda.

???According to Christopher Ramirez, a sophomore political science major, men are becoming more aware of hair care and are frequenting salons to get haircuts such as fades, mohawks, faux-hawks or buzz cuts more than ever.

???"The bob is starting to go out of style," Maroney said. "Dark funky hairstyles with pieced layers or textures are more in style."

???Maroney advises women with longer hair to consider the seasonal look - textured layers and fall bangs, which can be very attractive depending on the frame of one's face.???

???"Faux-hawks were the most popular hairstyle for guys this semester," Ramirez said. "It was the latest trend, but has started going out of style. A lot more guys now are wearing a fade with some length to it, to be a little messy while still maintaining a clean, edgy look."

???Not everyone is so savvy about the new up-and-coming hair trends. Some students agree that hairstyling is time consuming, and admit to settling with bed-heads, especially when they are running to class.

???"I am a bed-head - it's just easier, especially when I am going to school, to just roll out of bed and throw my hair up," said Ann Marie Murnane, a freshman biomedical science major.

???According to Mahoney, students who are looking to save time and keep their hair stylish are visiting Rosanne's Hair Shop, located in The Commons on North Campus. Rosanne's offers students hairstyles, cuts, coloring, and just about any other hair treatment on campus.

???The salon is staffed with experienced hair stylists who are ready to combine their ideas to create individual looks for everyone, according to Kristalee Metzger, a hair stylist at Rosanne's.

???"I usually go anywhere, but Rosanne`s Hair Shop is on campus and quick," said Sara Thompson, a sophomore nursing major.

???Maroney advises students to stop in at Rosanne's for a friendly consultation, whether it is for hair or any related treatments.

???Thompson recommends Supercuts for students off campus because it offers reasonable prices.

???"I style my hair myself and straighten it most of the time because it is the easiest," Thompson said. "I have tried different colors and styles, but I like bangs the best."

???Even though getting professional hair care is rewarding, not all students visit hair salons. According to Waldeis, it is much easier for women to throw their hair into a ponytail or wear a hat on occasion.

???"Hats definitely eliminate the process of doing hair," Waldeis said. "I have naturally curly hair, and I also make it straight to make it easier."

???Ramirez prefers to buy his own hair products and keep a short hair cut with a fade. This style is convenient and cheaper than other options, and also allows flexibility to style hair messy, combed, or spiked.

???"Wax is a great product that adds a lot of texture," Maroney said. "Pomade adds texture while also adding shine."

???Metzger advises students to look closely at the labels of hair care products when they are purchasing them. Not all products really offer what they say on the bottle. It can be beneficial to purchase salon products, which, though expensive, are much healthier for hair.
