Election 2008: Spectrum Staff Perspectives

Name & Position: Stephanie Sciandra, Editor in Chief

Who I'm voting for: John McCain

Why: I don't trust Barack Obama and I don't support a lot of his policies. I don't think that Obama is going to be the change people want and I don't think he's going to follow through on a lot of his promises. I don't like Sarah Palin though and I wish McCain would have picked a better running mate - she doesn't stand for anything I believe in.

Who I think is going to win: It's really hard to say right now. On one hand, I feel like Obama might win because that's what the media and the polls have been predicting, but I also think that living in a blue state and on a college campus may have skewed those predictions a bit.

Name & Position: Amanda Shettleton, Senior Life Editor

Who I'm voting for: Barack Obama

Why: Obama understands domestic policy; that society is changing and we need strong foundations in energy alternatives, education, and social programs. The continuance of the Iraq War is in no way an option in my mind. Obama will bring diplomacy to the world stage instead of tanks! Also, Sarah Palin is a tool and the fact that McCain chose her completely undermined my trust in his decision-making skills.

Who I think is going to win: Barack Obama

Name & Position: Garrett Carlson, Arts Editor

Who I'm voting for: Barack Obama

Why: While I think our faltering economy is highly important, I think regaining our image in the world stage is just as important. Obama provides us with an intelligent, calming individual that I can trust to deal with foreign leaders alongside his policies on health care and taxes that benefit the youth of our country.

Who I think is going to win: America. No matter what, the Bush years are almost over.

Name & Position: Joann Pan, Senior News Editor

Who I'm voting for: Barack Obama

Why: I am voting for Obama and Biden because they have concrete plans with their goal of fixing our national education systems and health care system. I am glad one presidential candidate has enough sense to want to tackle the HIV/AIDS epidemic, protect the uninsured and fight heart disease and cancer. I'm also very in favor of his foreign policy plans to secure nuclear weapons lost abroad, initiate a new plan of diplomacy and fight global poverty. In this time of war and international chaos, we need leaders focused on bettering relations abroad, rather than having someone like McCain who wants to fight for an individuals' right to bear arms - it is unnecessary.

Who I think is going to win: Barack Obama

Name & Position: Jennifer Lombardo, Asst. Copy Editor

Who I'm voting for: Barack Obama

Why: I know the word "change" has been overused in this campaign, but I think it is an important issue. Very few people like the way the country has been run for the past eight years, and to me, John McCain seems like he's just going to continue the way things have been going. Even other countries want Obama to win, and I would be happy if the entire world stopped hating us so much.

Who I think is going to win: I think it's too close to call right now.

Name & Position: Dennis Seaman, Asst. Life Editor

Who I'm voting for: Barack Obama

Why: His plan focuses on something that this nation's government seems to have forgotten about lately: the health, quality of life, and education (among other things) of middle class Americans. While John McCain plans to make sure that there is icing on the cake, Barack Obama plans to make sure that everybody gets some.

Who I think is going to win: I don't want to jinx it.
