Competing

???Snowflakes, chilly winds and sweat-breaking competition are in the forecast this Saturday as Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) hosts a Capture the Flag Tournament to help raise awareness of cancer and treatment research.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and CAC did not hesitate to rise to the occasion and get students actively involved. Similar to other CAC events such as Relay for Life and the Save Second Base Kickball Tournament, the focus of Saturday's tournament is for students to have fun while giving to a cause.

???"We want to promote education," said Allison Landry, a junior occupational therapy major and the president of CAC. "Cancer is not easy; that is why our main focus is to get people, especially college students, engaged and aware through doing something fun and healthy."

???Although the temperature is gradually dropping, the tournament will be held outside the Student Union at 3 p.m. on Saturday regardless of weather, according to Landry.

???While competitors battle outdoors, other festivities will be held inside the Student Union. CAC will have popcorn, cotton candy and plenty of entertainment to keep students occupied.

???If participants need to take a break from the cold weather and wish to retreat indoors, they can take part in Twister, Guitar Hero, poker and Dance Dance Revolution.

???"It's going to be a very positive atmosphere," Landry said. "The games will be fun and will at the same time educate people about cancer awareness."

???According to Landry, all proceeds go right towards the cause with a portion going to Relay for Life, a part of the American Cancer Society focused on cancer research and treatments. The other portion will go to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

???"It was important to donate proceeds to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, located in Buffalo," Landry said. "We also want to help out the Buffalo Community as much as we can."

???Relay for Life has been in existence since 1985 and UB has promoted the charitable event for five years, according to Landry.

???"This event is important because everyone is affected by cancer, in one way or another," Landry said. "Whether it be you, your friends, your family or someone you know who is directly affected, it is imperative for people to be aware."

???CAC is partaking in more future events as well, including the all-night Relay for Life event meant to signify that cancer never sleeps. CAC encourages students to participate in the Capture the Flag Tournament as well as these future gatherings during the school year.

"With recent technology, it is vital to raise awareness to help support the developments and improvements of cancer treatments," Landry said. "There are a lot of things out there that people can do to help; this is our contribution."

???Individual registration is $2 while the cost of a five-person team is $10. Students can fill out an entrance form found on the event Web site, www.cacrelay.buffalo.edu, and return it to 238 Student Union at anytime on Friday.
