An evolving legend

R&B superstar John Legend has certainly evolved, switching up his eminence with his third and most recent album Evolver. Welcoming supporting help from artists like Kanye West, Brandy, Andre 3000 and Estelle, Legend has undeniably stepped it up a notch.

His smash hit and first single off of the album, "Green Light" featuring Andre 3000, proves that the soulful crooner still has some hit records up his sleeve.

The track starts with Legend singing a cappella, until an electronic funky beat drops and dance beats bump alongside catchy lyrics, providing an instant club hit.

"Give me the green light/ Give me just one night/ I'm ready to go right now," sings Legend.

Another up-tempo track, "It's Over" featuring Kanye West, is an upbeat break-up lesson. West's digitized sound add a sense of humor to the track, not to mention his clever verses.

"We lost the four-leaf clover/ Don't ask why shortie be over/ News flash, shortie, we over/ We like Def Jam and Hova," he sings.

One of the many highlights on Evolver is a duet with former teen sensation and current comeback artist Brandy, who has been hitting up radios herself lately with her new hit single "Right Here."

Her raspy yet soulful voice is well suited for Legend's track "Quickly."

"I know we just met, but baby could you love me quickly/ I want you to love me like the world's about to end baby, quickly/ Kiss me like the world is quaking/ Do it like the earth is shaking," sings Legend.

Categorizing Evolver as a basic album with dance tracks and slow ballads would be exigent.

Legend's album ranges from his customary, and dazzling, piano ballads like "This Time" and "Everybody Knows" to a reggae track featuring Estelle titled "No Other Love" and "I Love, You Love," a reggae guitar-based track that will give listeners a mixture of tunes to jam to.

For listeners who are not normally R&B fans, this album is sure to win you over. Legend mixes soulful melodies and dance club anthems, further evolving into a one of a kind artist.
