Best fall activity: applepicking

There will be plenty of chilly autumn days to take advantage of in Buffalo. Many college students lack the spontaneity to find a good time because of a lack of funds but with just a couple of dollars, students can advantage of what nature has to offer in the final days before winter.

On the next dry fall day, grab a couple of friends and drive out for a day trip to Lockport's Blackman Homestead Farms.

The drive is a part of the adventure as there will be plenty of cool sights for city-folk to take in along the way. Passing through Lockport you'll catch glimpses of alpacas, horses and the Buffalo countryside.

On Thrall Road, you'll hit a large patch of apple trees - that's how you know you've reached your destination.

Since 1852, the Blackman family has been greening apple orchards and raising cattle. There is an abundance of apples, pears, pumpkins, goats and turkeys on this charming farm 20 minutes away from North Campus.

Friendly farm staff will greet you and help you strap on apple bags.

Their U-Pick apple business brings people from all over to pick homegrown apples of many different assortments from branches. Cortland, Ida Red, Red Delicious and Empire varieties are some of many apple varieties available. Students can stock up because apples are only 50 cents a pound at the farm.

Delicious pie fillings, fruit butters, maple syrup and fresh pressed apple cider are also available for students to bring home.
