Students looking to get away from Ugg Boots and shrill screams of "oh my gawd" need to look no further than the Buffalo Museum of Science (BMoS).
There are several theories as to why Long Islanders avoid the museum. Legend has it that the sights of the wooly mammoth feet are an all-too-potent reminder of the ridiculousness of those shaggy, stereotypically LI mukluks.
Or it could just be that the BMoS just doesn't stack up to the much larger American Museum of Natural History in the closer-to-home NYC.
Either way, the BMoS offers a few surprises that are well worth the price of admission.
The current featured exhibit is "Culture Quest," with personal items loaned to the museum from famous Buffalonians including Robby Takac from the Goo Goo Dolls. It also offers some insight into how museums function.
On Oct. 5, students can grab their smaller siblings and attend a lights-out museum mystery after the museum closes for the day. Attendees will gather clues and work together to complete the case. Pizza and breakfast will be provided for aspiring detectives to munch on while trying to piece the clues together.
And of course, there is always the dinosaur and the Egyptian exhibits that have been a staple of Buffalo area field trips since anyone can remember. The nostalgic value alone is worth the $5 price of admission for anyone who grew up within 50 miles of the city.
Students can visit this sweet escape from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Wednesday until Saturday and noon until 5 p.m. on Sundays.
