The independent student publication of The University at Buffalo, since 1950

"To the editor,"

I am a graduate student and must tell you that I am quite disturbed by The Spectrum's recent article concerning the Sub-Board I./GSA controversy. The fact that every year a student government comes under fire is of no surprise. However, what is more troubling is the way in which your paper held a glaring bias for Mr. Kased's position. Specifically, the fact that Annika Hagley and Stephen Krysty, who were accused of helping to keep Mr. Kased "shut up" from both the Senate meeting, and the Echo, had no comments in the article. If people are implicated in such allegations, should they not have the right to comment in your piece? I believe they would, if you were being fair and balanced, which is clearly not the case. Even more disturbing is that Mr. Kased's alleged victimization by Mrs. Dwyer and the GSA as a whole did not make it into your paper until the first day of the GSA elections when Mrs. Dwyer was still believed to be running, as opposed to February when these events took place. Is this some kind of freak coincidence? Is it also a coincidence that this article appeared of this particular day, right when Mr. Kased's friends are running in the GSA election?

It is a sad day when a newspaper like The Spectrum, which has had the reputation of being honest, fair, and balanced, since at least the past five years I have been here, becomes a place for friends to have their one-sides stories published. It is quite fascistic and completely repulsive. I do not even hope that this will appear in your paper, since I am clearly not a friend of Mr. Kased and am critical of both him and you. However, my conscience and my ethics would not allow me to sit on the sidelines and keep silent.

Sincerely,

Gay Lynne Samsonoff, Ed.M.

Vice President

GSA
