UB Council student rep no longer a member

As of Monday, Ilia Nossov, a senior business major, is no longer the student representative on the UB Council.

"He is not eligible to be in the University Council any longer," said Jennifer Wantz, assistant director of student activities. "The position is now open and we're trying to fill it with a temporary appointment."

Officials refused to comment on the causes of Nassov's ineligibility.

"It is a student privacy issue," said Barbara Ricotta, associate vice president for campus life.

In April 2007, Nossov was elected by his fellow students to the 2007-08 UB Council in an election held on UB Learns. He began his term as student representative of the ten-member council last July. The New York state governor appoints the other members to seven-year terms. The Council serves as an advisory body to UB and President Simpson on university matters such as academics, student life and finances.

On Thursday, there will tentatively be a meeting of the Council of Presidents, which is made up of the president from every student government body, to appoint a temporary replacement for Nossov.

Based on Board of Trustee policies, the council has 15 days to decide on a replacement, who will sit in for 60 days. Preparations are underway for the 2008-2009 elections, when students will elect a new student representative.
