SA election occurs despite one party race

On Thursday, results of the two-day undergraduate Student Association elections were tallied and certified by independent individuals of the Erie County Board of Elections and the student body.

The Progress Party, the lone party that ran this year, will continue in their current positions after the elections. SA President Peter Grollitsch, Vice President Ashish Abraham and Treasurer John Martin all ran for reelection.

The incoming SA delegates, none of whom were incumbents, will begin their term on May 1. This is the first year in which there was only a single party running together in SA elections.

"Our party was the only one picked up petitions and got the necessary signatures," said SA President Peter Grollitsch.

A total of 155 students took part in the election process during the voting period, shortened to two days, according to Grollitsch.

Many people were opposed to this situation, he said. In response, the party decided to go through with the democratic voting process.

"We wanted people to know what was going on. There were some comments about how basically we only need one vote to win. There were some objections to that so we said 'Why, don't we go through with it?' We didn't really know what to do in this case because it's never happened before," Grollitsch said.

All seven members of next year's SA executive board received hundreds of undergraduate signatures beforehand in order to run in the election, according to Grollitsch.
