Movie: The Ten
Check out this underrated, and under-seen, 2007 comedic play off of The Ten Commandments. It features every member of the comedy group The State, not to mention appearances by Paul Rudd, Jessica Alba, and Winona Ryder. Director David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer) talks to The Spectrum about the film and what's on the horizon for The State and his own career.
Spectrum: Were you impressed with the final result [of the film]?
David Wain: "I was pretty happy with it. . .We were tackling an ambitious concept, especially for a low budget film."
S: What was your favorite of the ten stories?
DW: "What I liked was trying to do a different thing with each one. . .The CAT scan one came out particularly well." (See photo)
S: Is fresh comedy harder now that The State is 20 years old?
DW: "Every joke is a new joke. . .We have no interest in re-treading our greatest hits. The State is starting to work together in different ways."
S: What projects are in store for the future?
DW: "I certainly don't want to do absurdist comedy exclusively. I enjoy watching dramas more than watching comedies."
(Wain specifically referenced an upcoming comedy formerly known as Little Big Men (the new title is currently being hashed out), starring Paul Rudd, Seann William Scott, and Christopher "McLovin" Mintz-Plasse.)
S: Did having Mintz-Plasse on the set bring out some of the Apatow-style humor?
DW: "Having Paul [Rudd] and Chris Mintz-Plasse did bring some of that [Apatow] style to it. . .This new film is a combination of my sensibility and Paul Rudd co-wrote it. [The film] should come out in August."
