Sub-Board I, Inc. sponsored an event on Tuesday called Reproductive Rights, which attempted to pass off a pro-choice agenda as "objective fact." The New York Civil Liberties Union representatives present were supposed to educate students about a state bill called the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act, which is meant to advance women's reproductive rights.
Instead, they ended up aggressively advocating legislature which would permit abortion up to 24 weeks into gestation.
The meeting quickly became a one-sided argument; officials handed out paperwork describing abortion as the only means to an end, citing a "lack of state legislation" concerning women's reproductive rights.
SBI is to be recognized for a usual policy of neutral, objective education and services. The Spectrum reporters present at the event, however, found that just this once, propaganda slipped through the cracks.
Among other infractions, the hosts distributed pre-written letters to local politicians which participants needed only sign and mail off. Also presented was the argument that Roe v. Wade was in immediate danger of being overturned, a fear debated in the public eye and with no substantial proof of in support with the absence of recent appointment of conservative Supreme Court judges.
While the bill in question does include some good legislature concerning women's health and reproductive freedom, there are also many controversial components to it, including the extension of the limited weeks allowed for women to have an abortion under different circumstances.
Issue shouldn't be taken with the bill or Sub-Board, but with the union representatives, who overstepped their boundaries, tarnished Sub-Board's reputation and subjected students to a one-sided argument without presenting all of the facts or alternatives.
Under the guise of advising student's about their reproductive rights, the representatives shoved abortion down the attendees' throats. Women need to know all of their options before making a choice.
