Checklist for commencement***

As graduation draws closer, the tune of "Pomp and Circumstance" begins to creep into the minds of UB seniors. Although commencement takes place in early May, seniors need to keep track of the events and necessities leading up to the big day.

1. Make an advisement appointment

Students should check with their advisor to make sure that all their credits will be completed by the end of the spring semester and that they are on track to graduate. Seniors should also make sure that their Application for Degree has been successfully filed and received by the Student Response Center prior to ceremony registration.

"Don't be afraid to email and ask a lot of extra questions," said Adam Batt, a senior history major. "The people are very nice. They were extremely helpful."

2. Register for the Ceremony

The registration slots for each degree program are listed by program on the official commencement Web site, www.commencement.buffalo.edu. Each section contains a link that leads to the main registration page. Most ceremonies require students to register using this site.

"We encourage all seniors to go the Web site to gauge what needs they have," said Jennifer Wantz, assistant director of Student Activities. "It will give them all the information they need."

The deadline for ceremony registration is specific to each program, and is listed under the FAQ links.

3. Pick up cap, gown and tickets

The registration site of each ceremony will indicate whether or not that ceremony is ticketed. If so, tickets will be available for pickup through the North Campus bookstore, and students will be notified accordingly.

Caps and gowns will be available for purchase beginning March 3 through May 11 at the bookstore. Cap, gown and tassel packages cost $29.50 plus tax for undergraduates.

4. Prepare for life after college***

According to the Career Services Web site, a job and internship fair for all majors will take place in Alumni Arena on Feb. 28 from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The fair is an opportunity for students to get a leg up on career options in their field. Michael Braaten, a senior computer science major, used a recent career fair as an opportunity to land a position with a major company.

"Definitely take the opportunity. There are so many companies and so many people to talk to," Braaten said. "You can see what they're looking for."

In addition, Student Affairs offers seminars on strengthening resumes, finding internships, and preparing for interviews. More information can be found on the Life & Learning workshops Web site at www.workshops.buffalo.edu.

5. Participate in Senior Week activities

UB has planned activities to take place during senior week, from April 21 to April 26. An exclusive senior brunch will be on April 23. Seniors can select from four dining time slots: 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., or 2:30 p.m., and they may register for the brunch on the commencement Web site. The deadline for registration is April 21. Students should register as soon as possible to ensure their spot.

During senior week, there will be events such as a comedy show, Rose Day and Oozfest. More information regarding these activities can be found on the commencement Web site.

6. Stay connected via the Alumni Association

All UB seniors are encouraged to maintain a lifelong connection to UB through the Alumni Association. Membership is $30 for the first year, and lifetime memberships are also available. Members enjoy perks such as the use of UB libraries and access to Career Services.

"We basically want students to understand that they can still be tied to UB through the Alumni Association," said Andrea Costantino, director of Student Life. "We still want them to be part of the community [after graduation]."

More information on the Alumni Association membership can be found at www.alumni.buffalo.edu.

7. Order a class ring

A class ring is a way for students to forever cherish their experiences at UB. Valisa Flowers, a senior communications major, plans on buying a class ring.

"I never got a high school ring," Flowers said. "I wanted to have something to remind me of UB because it's far from home and after I leave, I don't plan on returning."

Class rings can be purchased online at www.jostens.com, or from a Jostens representative who will be present at most senior activities.

All additional commencement information, including dates, deadlines, and activities can be found on the commencement Web site.
